Clarifying Guidelines on Hydroxychloroquine

Fellow Texan,

Doctors and patients that seek hydroxychloroquine as a COVID treatment must have access, and every Texan deserves an honest assessment of the potential risks and benefits that is free of the hyper-politicized sentiments we have seen on the drug over the last few months. Although hydroxycholoroquine is completely allowed to be prescribed in Texas, there is confusion on the guidelines surrounding it. We have asked the Texas State Board of Pharmacy to make clear to physicians that HCQ is allowed in Texas and that there will be no disciplinary measures taken against physicians if they prescribe the drug. The truth of the matter is hydroxychloroquine has long been used and even encouraged among people of different ages, health conditions, and other factors. If this drug can be safely used to prevent malaria over many decades, it can safely be used to prevent COVID-19 as well—which will not just help the vulnerable, but every Texan, as we slowly but surely get back to work. Please click here to read our letter to the Pharmacy Board in full.
